Pema Lhakhang

Category: Temple Address Bumthang

Pema lhakhang is located near Norbugang village , between Kurje and Jampa lhakhangs. The temple was originally built to counteract the harm emanating from a nearby hill that resembles a three-headed ‘ harmful scorpion ‘. According to predictions recorded in the Lungten Kunsel Melong of Pema Lingpa regarding the ‘rise and fall of Bumthang valley ‘ Pema Lhakhang is one of the temples that exist during the time of Guru Rinpoche’s visit and therefore , it is one of the earliest established temples in Bumthang.

It is said that over the time it became dilapidated and was rebuilt by Ngogton Choeku Dorji (1036-1102) is the foremost disciple of Lotsawa Marpa in the 1st rabjung. The abridge catalogue of khachod Drenpai Shingta Keldan Gatshel of Lhochg Monkhai Drak mentions that Dronmai Lhakhang was moldeled upon the Ushang Doyi Lhakhang [ of Tibet] , and that Terton Drime Lhundrup renovated Dronmi lhakhang after it fell into disrepair. Though the text mentions that Terton Drime Lhundrub renovated a temple called Pema Lhakhang , it is not certain whether this is the same Pema Lhakhang referred to in the text; further research is necessary.

The research paper by the cultural officer of Bumthang Dzongkhag mentions that when late Her Majesty the Queen Grandmother Ashi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck execute the renovation the expansion of Guru Lhakhang at Kurje ,Gomchen Sonam Tenzin, who resided at Kaleg Gonpa , renovated all of its wooden components without disturbing the original stone walls using timber being provided by Her Majesty.
This temple houses sacred wall painting of Dudsol Lhamo ( Peldan Lhamo) , said to have been painted with blood that fell from the nose of Lama Ngogton Choeku Dorji. The temple is said to have built on the Latsho of protective Dudsol Lhamo and given that wooden flooring would be inappropriate for the deity, the floor of the temple is left as plain earth.
