Gongza Ney

Category: Temple Address Trashi Yangtse

Gongza Ney which is actually the corrupt form of 'Gungja Ney (afternoon/noon tea) is located at Toedtsho Gewog (in Trashigangtse) at an altitude of 950 m above sea level. The word 'Gongja' is almost equivalent to British 'afternoon tea' introduced in Britain in the early 1840s.

The story has it that when Guru Rinpoche arrived this very site from Arunachal Pradesh, subduing all demonic forces all along the ways and then enshrining the place like Omba Ney, he was offered tea. It was almost twelve noon or midday when the tea was offered. Thus, the place came to be known as Gungja which means 'midday tea'. Guru mediated at this place, subdued the resident spirit and then blessed the place.

This mystical overhanging rock which resembles Zangdok Pelri (Guru's copper-clad mountain Abode) and now enclosed by a small temple is said to be Guru's meditation cave/ site. It is believed that this rock holds many mystical and tantric treasures and essence. Today this temple houses many sacred treasures such as the Terdrom (stone treasure box), Guru's Tshoglam (ceremonial boot), Khandro's Baga (vulva), Garuda's egg, skull of khandro, Auzha (guru's cap) and so on. These treasures are all in Dotergi rangzhin (of stone treasures in essence) Even its surrounding is teemed with many oddly shaped stones and others treasured/enshrined in indefinite stone forms. Below the temple, two small springs (popularly known as phochu and mochu) flowing magnificently and joining the main (Dragmechu) are also to be seen.
It is almost 2 to 3 hours walk from the road point (sand extraction site).
