Chithang Rabten Choling

Chithang Rabten Choling is located at Chimithangkha under Mewang Gewog, Thimphu Dzongkhag. It is about an hour drive (about 20km) from Thimphu. This holy site is said to have been founded by Druckchen Ngawang Chögyal in 17th century coinciding the 8th Rabjung. Ngawang Chögyal who is considered as a manifestation of one of the 84 Mahasiddhas in ancient India, had previously been reborn in Tibet as the great meditator, Marpa Lotsawa. When he came to Bhutan, he constructed many temples, and Chithang Rabten Choling is believed to be one of them.

In the chronology of history, it is recorded that the arrival of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to Bhutan was as prophesied by a black Raven which was undisguised of Pel Yeshi Gonpo, the guardian deity of Bhutan. Zhabdrung, while on his way to the south have again seen Mahakala in his pure vision while at Dela Samten Choling. Later, when Zhabdrung came to Chithang Rabten Choling temple and spent a night, he was welcomed by the meditators from the Monastery with their warm hospitality. He was very happy and in his wonderful dream, the four groups of Dakini is said to have appeared and prophesied

The Dakinis further explored him not to give up his vision to bring the Dharma to the south, where he was destined to establish his Lineage. They pledged their commitment to protect the Dharma. Zhabdrung, after examining the good vision in his dream, set his journey towards Thimphu, and thus laid down the foundation of Glorious Lineage. Within the passage of time, some part of temple have deteriorated. Fortunately, they were renovated by the 16th Chieftain, Sonam Tobgay (1768).
